:Ben Williamson


Ben is currently a Scholar at the Royal College of Music, supported by a Helen Majory Tonks Award and the Josephine Baker Trust. He was Head Chorister at St. Margaret’s, Westminster Abbey; a Choral Scholar at the Abbey School, Tewkesbury; and spent three years as a Choral Scholar at King’s College, Cambridge, where he read Philosophy.

Ben played Arsamenes in a production of Handel’s Xerxes with Fitzwilliam Chamber Opera in November 2007 and April 2008. He has also staged Act 2, scene 1 from Cavalli’s La Calisto at the RCM; and has sung the final duet from Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea and performed arias and scenes from Handel's Rinaldo and Giulio Cesare, with Hand Made Opera.

Ben has made numerous solo appearances across England and abroad, including the singing of a song by Weelkes with King’s College Choir on a tour of the Baltic States, and the alto solos in Bach’s St John Passion and Handel’s Messiah in Rome with Hand Made Opera. Ben has also sung Bach Cantata BWV 170 Vergnügte Ruh, beliebte Seelenlust with the Cambridge University Baroque Ensemble.

Ben has a particular passion for Baroque opera and oratorio, although his repertoire of song includes works by Debussy, Schumann and Quilter as well as by Dowland, Purcell and Monteverdi. Ben currently studies with Ashley Stafford, and formerly studied with Colin Baldy.
